Special award recognises V4C’s contribution to women and girls empowerment in Kaduna State, Nigeria
Voices for Change (V4C)’s Kaduna State team has been recognised for its contribution towards the economic empowerment of women and girls in Kaduna. The award, given during the 2017 Kaduna Women’s Economic Empowerment Summit came as a complete surprise and was presented in recognition of the Kaduna State Team’s successful facilitation of the Results for Girls and Women in Kaduna (REWORK) Project. REWORK is an approach for increasing government commitment to girls and women in the Kaduna State budget.
The Summit, which held on May 10th & 11th 2017, was hosted by the Kaduna State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development under the theme “Empowering Access and Participation: Linking Women to Resources”. Sarah Didi, V4C’s Kaduna State Coordinator, who accepted the award, expressed how fulfilling it was to see “the Ministry of Women Affairs, who V4C has supported, take on their own initiative to train other people working on gender and build up on this process to achieve such profound success.”
One of the project’s major achievements was a 400 per cent increase in the State Government budget for women and girls which was approved by the Executive Council (headed by the Governor) and the Kaduna State House of Assembly. The State’s Ministries of Women Affairs and Budget & Planning were also mandated to encourage other Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to create opportunities for women to access information on the REWORK initiative.
As a result of the REWORK intervention, every Ministry, Department and Agency has appointed a gender focal person who helps the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development to recognise and address gender concerns and activities that will increase opportunities for women and girls of Kaduna state.
In achieving this great feat, Kaduna State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development has benefited significantly high quality technical support from V4C, which led to the recognition for an award.
